Top 5 Wednesday! | Five Popular Books I DNF’d

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme created by Lainey @ Gingerreadslainey on the Youtubes. This weeks theme is “Books I didn’t finish”.  I thought I’d amp it up a little and choose 6 books that fell totally flat for me and are – surprise – super popular.

  1. Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson – this book bored me so much.  I didn’t get the book, nothing drew me in.  I only read about 40 pages and gave up.  I KNOW IT’S TERRIBLE.  Maybe I’ll pick it up again one day.
  2. The Iron Trial by Holly Black & Cassandra Clare – I really, really dislike Holly Black’s writing.  It just grates me.  I have DNF’d every book she has ever written.
  3. Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins – Okay, I confess, I really wanted to like this book.  Unfortunately, a Mary Sue MC and unbelievable romances / attitudes just blew it over my head.  Maybe I’m just too old for books like these?
  4. The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman – AKA the journal of a whine-y teenage girl who has to talk about every god damn thing in the whole universe.  DNF and I had NO REGRETS.  NOTHING HAPPENS.
  5. The Maze Runner by James Dashner – There was 0 appeal with this book.  I tried it, it fell flat, I gladly DNF’d.  I definitely feel like this is a hit or miss in the bookish community.
  6. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – Ahhhh…. So this one I kind of feel bad about.  I definitely feel like to fully enjoy and love this book you need the physical copy.  I just couldn’t stand reading it on my iPad and honestly it’s so freaking long.  I don’t got time for that.

So I’ve Been Thinking of Creating an April Book Blogging Theme..

Kind of similar to what the lovely Beauty and the Bookish did this month with the “Book Blogging Extravaganza”.

Thoughts?  Would you like me to do something like that?  I have half of it already done but I wasn’t sure if anyone would want to participate

Let me know!

🙂

Top Ten Tuesday! | Ten Books I Really Love But Feel Like I Haven’t Talked About Enough

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish.  Each Tuesday there is a new theme, this week was “Ten Books I Really Love But Feel Like I Haven’t Talked About Enough”.  This is what I came up with,

Honestly, I loved these series so much!  The one I really wish I would talk about more is G. J. Walker-Smith’s Saving Wishes. Guys, I don’t even like contemporary that much and I LOVED these series.  Adam Decarie is my #1 favorite male love interest in any book, ever.

I have definitely talked about Laura Thalassa on my blog, but if you have yet to check her out DO IT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

Any who, that is all for today!  I’m kind of debating buying a blog theme as I honestly hate mine.  Do you guys have any rec’s on where to get one?

Review: The Siren by Kiera Cass

The Siren by Kiera Cass

Pages: 327
Published:
January 26th 2016
Publisher: HarperTeen
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy / Romance
Goodreads Rating: 3.87/5
My rating: 3/5

Synopsis:

A girl with a secret.
The boy of her dreams.
An Ocean between them.

Years ago, Kahlen was rescued from drowning by the Ocean. To repay her debt, she has served as a Siren ever since, using her voice to lure countless strangers to their deaths. Though a single word from Kahlen can kill, she can’t resist spending her days on land, watching ordinary people and longing for the day when she will be able to speak and laugh and live freely among them again.

Kahlen is resigned to finishing her sentence in solitude…until she meets Akinli. Handsome, caring, and kind, Akinli is everything Kahlen ever dreamed of.

Falling in love with a human breaks the Ocean’s rules. But for the first time in a lifetime of following the rules, Kahlen is determined to follow her heart.

Guys I heard so much about this novel since release, who hasn’t?  Kiera Cass, famously infamous for her Selection series has written another novel… And this time it’s about Sirens.  Quite honestly?  I don’t see the appeal with Sirens.  No novel I have ever read with them has really “wowed” me, and this one didn’t either.

The characters were boring.  Kahlen is probably the most boring MC I’ve read in a while.  She didn’t have some great personality, no personal mission or goal, nada.  Her actual goal in life was to get married. That’s it.  The supporting characters were also pretty monotonous, I don’t feel like Cass fully explored these characters enough to garner attention.

There was a weird religious undertone that I did NOT like. The Ocean is pretty much a divine being in this book, a personification (oceanification??) of God.  She is the mother, She is the one to please, She needs the sacrifices to save more lives, She knows everything, She loves everyone.  Do you see my point?  Have you ever seen the TV series The Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt?  It starts out with Kimmie and a couple other ladies being held in this underground bunker by some creepy ass guy for YEARS.  The Ocean was basically the equivalent of the man, and she has each of the Sirens held under a sort of “contract” to serve Her for 100 years.  It was kind of disgusting and weird.  And to be quite frank, I don’t mind a little religion in any of the novels I read, but this was a bit nauseating as it was a constant theme.

The romance was pretty insta love-y.  Akinli (seriously, what is it with these weird names) was a really sweet love interest.  He reminded me a lot of John Ambrose McClaren from Jenny Han’s PS. I Still Love You.  Such a sweet and cute man who really did woo Kahlen.  Akinli was 10 times more interesting then Kahlen and we see him in like two chapters of the entire novel.

I’m not too sure about this book.  It was fast and easy to read, good for getting out of reading slumps.  But it definitely wasn’t the best book of 2016, nor would it get on the top ten list.  If you’re looking for something simple, this is it.  I would say read it to get it off your TBR, but don’t expect too much.  I loved the cover though, it’s the only reason I actually reached for the book.  #A+marketing

And that’s all!  I’ve been in a big blogging / reading slump.  I won’t tag anyone in this because it’s a St. P’s theme tag, but if you want to do it I TAG YOU 🙂

The Pixar Tag!

It’s day 3 of the Book Blogging Extravaganza and today’s prompt was to do a tag!  Which is perfect because I absolutely love Pixar.
The Pixar Tag was created by Mishma over at Chasing Fairytales and it’s total perfection.  I feel like her GIF choices were part of the tag… so I’m leaving them. :]

Oh GOD! I went through a list (yes seriously) of all the Pixar movies ever made. Why? Because I’m old (23), I’ve seen them all, and my memory isn’t as great as it used to be.  Anyways, it comes down to a tie: Ratatouille (yessss), Finding Nemo (YAAASSS), and Inside Out (I CRIED).

Harry Potter! Guys, its our generations book, how can you not say Harry Potter? I will forever love it.
Okay, since I’m all about being honest and slaying certain fandoms (only on Mondays, I promise, sorry if you like the book).  I’m calling out Holly Black’s The Iron Trials because holy cash cow Batman all I saw was Harry Potter warning bells flashing before my eyes.  If I wanted to read Harry Potter again I will do just that.
OH! oh! OH! I know! GUYS if you’ve read Falling Kingdoms, you are probably riding the same train as me when it comes to Magnus.  Oh Magnus *sighing forever*.  I definitely feel like he’s supposed to be a villain but I just… don’t… I want him and Cleo to be a thing and I want him to become good.  Why can’t it happen? Whyyyyyyy :'(.
One family I absolutely loved in literature? The Bennet sisters from Pride and Prejudice.  I just loved their kindred spirits, love, and dedication.

I have always love Clary Fairchild’s ability to create angelic runes in The Mortal Instruments so I have to go with that

Basically all of the Chronicles of Ixia by Maria V. Snyder.  There is so much traveling done that it’s sometimes hard to keep track of it all.  Yelena, Valek, Leif, Janco, etc. are ALWAYS going somewhere days away.
One of them is definitely Alec from The Mortal Instruments.  His character always drew me in and he was a perfect fit for Jace.
tumblr_mklr4fhL821rp92vzo2_500.gif
Indie author Laura Thalassa’s The Queen of All That Dies. Oh my god! If you have not read it GET ON THAT.  I freaking love this series.

So I’m not sure if it’s the most beautiful, but I really loved Celaena and Sam’s love in the Assassin’s Blade.  It just hit home so hard and gave me all the possible feels.  I also really loved Shatter Me‘s Juliette and Aaron love story.  I think it was the poetic writing style Mafi had that really drew me in.

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

THIS HAS SPOILERS!!!!!!! I have a non spoiler review posted on my blog.

Pages: 720
Published: March 8th 2016
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Genre: YA Fantasy
Goodreads Rating: 4.58/5
My Rating: 5/5

Synopsis:

The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare’s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

ARE YOU FREAKING READY FOR THIS DISCUSSION BECAUSE I JUST FINISHED THE BOOK AND ME:

HANDS DOWN. THE BEST.

GUYSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

HOLY FREAKING BATMAN.

Firstly, go ahead and check out my non spoiler review here so you can kinda see my general feels.  This discussion is PURELY to talk about the amount of fangirling, OH-MY-GOD!!! moments, and freaking pure bliss and happiness. There are post-its upon post-its in my book that NEED to be talked about.

Can we just QUICKLY talk about the beginning of the book? The storyline of Kit and Rook seemed like it was going somewhere super interesting then it was just cut off… I was so thrown off by this!  What the hell was that? Why are they relevant? Is Emma dragging Kit back to the Institute?  Now, since we’ve all read the book (RIGHT?) I’m going to save this huge “OH MY GOD!!??!” moment for later.

Let’s continue.

In each of Clare’s Shadowhunter series (The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments) we see the deep-rooted love she has to make a really witty character as comic relief.  Of course, these characters were always Herondale’s (Will in TID and Jace in TMI), but it takes a really unexpected and awesome turn when we see that role being filled by a Carstairs.

I’m not necessarily saying that only the Herondale’s had the right to solid wit, but it was just interesting to see another family take the defining characteristic of another family.  In this spin off series Emma Carstairs is basically the new Jace Herondale – an orphan, stubborn, brave, witty as hell, and noble.

That’s not the spirit of the Law, Emma. Remember? ‘The Law is hard, but it is the law’?”

I thought it was ‘the Law is annoying, but it is also flexible.”

That is not the motto and Diana is going to kill you.

It turns out that Emma has been alone at the LA Institute all summer because the Blackthorns have gone to Europe.  I honestly kind of forgot how much I liked the relationship of Emma and Julian until the moment they see each other again.  Julian had come off a bit standoffish and then this:

She felt a light touch on her arm.

It was Julian. With his fingers he began to trace words against her skin – it was something they had been doing their whole lives.  Ever since they realized they needed a way to silently communicate during boring study sessions or time with adults. A-R-E-Y-O-U-A-L-R-I-G-H-T?

She nodded at him. He was looking at her with faint concern, which was a relief.

Can we say aww? Because it was so sweet.  This silent method of communication only Julian and her shared literally made me ship them in 5 seconds. Flat. You can easily see a glimpse how much love there is between the two of them, and though it was a little (read: obviously) angsty, I loved it.  The development of their romantic relationship was perfect.

Emma,” he said, his voice sounding blurry with sleep.

I thought you were going to come to my room, she wanted to say, but she couldn’t. He looked so tired, it melted her heart. She reached out to brush his hair out of his eyes, paused, and put her hand to his shoulder instead. He had rolled onto his side; she recognized the worn T-shirt and sweatpants he wore.

His eyes were starting to flutter closed again.

Jules,” she said impulsively. “Can I stay?

It was their code, the short version of the longer request: Stay and make me forget my nightmares. Stay and sleep next to me. Stay and chase the bad dreams away, the memories of blood, of dead parents, of Endarkened warriors with eyes like dead black coals.

I didn’t catch onto the reference at the end, but then I remembered how Julian’s dad was “possessed” in CoHF and it kind of breaks your heart.  We see these characters five years after the incident and it honestly makes you wonder how hard learning to cope was.  We see glimpses of Emma’s closet and know her obsession with the murders was her method of “coping”, but we don’t really see how Julian coped.  Quite frankly, Julian got the shit end of the stick.  Not only did he have to kill his father, he had to learn to become a parent, cope with his lost siblings, be a parabatai, and learn to run the Institute.  Julian literally does so much it’s almost incomprehensible.

We also kind of see Clare take a jab at the Shadowhunters TV show
and it kind of made me laugh.  But also made me a little disappointed? Because I really love seeing the Shadowhunter world come to life.

Technically, the Institute wasn’t supposed to have a computer in it.

The Clave resisted the advent of modernity but even more so any engagement with mundane culture.

As an aside, when Clary and Jace do make an appearance in the books I envisioned TV-Jace and not movie-Jace.  I only wish TV-Jace had a British accent and the wit of movie-Jace.  Maybe their love child would be the perfect Jace? He’s way too macho in the TV series.

BIG REVEAL #1: MARK RETURNS!!!!!!!!

GUYSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I screeched when I read this! And my heart also broke, because the Fey never give back what they take.  And didn’t the deal the Blackthorns struck with the Fae seemed way too good to be true?  I actually expected the Fae to take back Mark by the end of the book, but thank god Clare didn’t leave us with that gaping cliffhanger of death.

The development of Mark’s character is so painstakingly transparent in this book that it made me so happy by the end.  However it was the beginning that really stuck with me:

Mark” he said. “Mark Antony Blackthorn. Please. It’s not a dream. You’re really here. You’re home.

He reached for Mark’s hand. Mark whipped it back, away from him. “You are a lying smoke.”

I’m your brother.”

I have no brothers and sisters, no family. I am alone. I ride with the Wild Hunt. I am loyal to Gwyn the Hunter.” Mark recited the words as if by rote.

I am not Gwyn,” said Julian. “I’m a Blackthorn. I have Blackthorn blood in me, just like you.”

You are a phantom and a shadow. You are the cruelty of hope.” Mark turned his face away. “Why do you punish me? I have done nothing to displease the Hunt.”

There is no punishment here.” Julian took a step closer to Mark. Mark didn’t move, but his body trembled. “This is home. I can prove it to you.”

[. . .]

We were up in the training room. We heard noises, and you went downstairs. But before you went you said something to me. Do you remember?”

Mark stood very still.

You said ‘Stay with Emma,'” Julian said. “You said to stay with her, and I have. We’re parabatai now. I’ve looked after her for years and I always will, because you asked me to, because it was the last thing you ever said to me, because-“

He remembered, then, that Cristina was there, and cut himself off abruptly. Mark was staring at him, silent. Julian felt despair well up inside him. Maybe this was a trick of the faeries, maybe they had given Mark back, but so broken and hollowed out that he wasn’t Mark anymore. Maybe-

Mark nearly fell forward, and threw his arms around Julian

[. . .]

Julian,” Mark said, muffled, his body shaking. “Julian, my brother, my brother.”

GOD MY HEART FREAKING MELTED FOREVERRRRRRR. Happy sigh, this was really sweet.

Also, I’m still kind of laughing at the weird names the Blackthorn children were all given.  It’s so random.

ONE FINAL NOTE ON MARK:

Cristina hesitated for a moment, blood rising into her face, but it was clear Mark wasn’t being touched against his will. Mark’s hands were tangled in Kieran’s hair, and he was kissing him as fiercely as if he were starving. Their bodies were pressed together tightly, nevertheless, Kieran clutched at Mark’s waist, his hands moving restlessly, desperately, as if he could pull Mark closer still.

WHAT WAS THAT?!?!?? WHAT??? This scene threw me for a total loop.  Clare made such a weird love triangle between Mark, Cristina, and Kieran.  I kept switching between which of them I shipped together more.  But then obviously Perfect Diego happened and then whipping happened, and then… nothing.  Mark ends up with nobody and it was just like what was the point?  I just wan’t him to be happy, damnit.

Julian and Emma finally cross a line no
parabatai’s were supposed to cross.  And honestly I was freaking out. This ship has SAILED, folks

The wall that usually hid the truth deep in his eyes had crumbled: she could see the panic there, the desperation, the relief that had punched through his defenses.

He was still holding her wrist. she didn’t know if she leaned into him first or if he pulled her toward him. Maybe both. They crashed together like stars colliding, and then he was kissing her.

Jules. Julian. Kissing her.

GAHHHHHH. AND IT ONLY GETS MORE STEAMY AND ANGSTY AND I KIND OF LOVE IT??

I tried to stop,” he said. “That’s why I went to England. I thought if I was away from you, maybe I’d stop feeling what I was feeling. But as soon as I got back, the first second that I saw you, I knew it hadn’t made any difference.” He looked around the room, his expression almost resigned. “Why all these paintings of you? Because I’m an artist, Emma. These pictures are my heart. And if my heart was a canvas, every square inch of it would be painted over with you.”

#my heart

#weepingwithjoy

And now for the biggest spoiler in the history of HOLY FUCK!!!!!!!!

You must grieve later. Right now you are in grave danger. More of these things may come, and worse things as well.”

He looked at her through the haze. His mouth tasted bitter. “Are you a Shadowhunter?”

I am not,” Tessa Gray said with a surprising firmness. “But you are.” She reached her hand down toward him. “Come now,” she said. “On your feet, Christopher Herondale. We’ve been looking for you for a long time.”

What-did-you-say-gif.gif

stephen-colbert-report-excited.gif

She had looked at Kit with love and sadness when she had gone over to him and held out her hand.

Christopher Herondale.

But Kit is short for Christopheris it not?” Tessa asked now, still gently. Kit said nothing. “Christopher Jonathan Herondale is your true name. And your father was Jonathan, too, right?”

Johnny. Jonathan.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!?!?!

IS HE CLARYS BROTHER? IS THIS A THING? HE KNOWS? DOES HE NOT KNOW? HOW DID TESSA AND JEM KNOW? WHAT?!?!?!?

CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN THIS??

oh my god.

oh my god!!

I have to stop here because I’m like re-freaking out over this HUGE MONUMENTAL REVEAL. I don’t even care about Malcolm and the weird Lady Midnight storyline, this was the butter. This was the freaking earth shattering reveal. The climax of ALL climaxes in literature because holy SHIT.

What did you guys think!?!? Did you expect that? Did it blow your mind? Was there anything else that really made you squeal or be angry about? I’m honestly 100% satisfied with this novel.  I loved it. I freaking loved it and am bowing the the literary Goddess that is Cassandra Clare.

Naysayers can say it’s stupid and she’s milking it, but this was totally worth it.

5/5 stars.

HANDS DOWN. THE BEST.

GUYSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

HOLY FREAKING BATMAN.

When I first hear that Clare was making a spinoff series, I was excited but hesitant. Why? Because everyone kept screeching that Clare was sucking the profit from the Shadowhunter world.  And honestly? I kind of agreed – “How much more can she write?”, “How can she keep this going?”.  Well let me tell YOU naysayers – Clare did it and it was AMAZEBALLS.

Taking place five years after City of Heavenly Fire, we are plunged once again deep into the Shadowhunter world.  This time around, we are following the Los Angeles institute’s Blackthorn family and Emma Carstairs (a descendent of Jem from the The Infernal Devices series).  During CoHF we get glimpses into their lives as it was prepping us for the lives of these characters for this spinoff series and I am glad.  We get to see just how each of these characters have grown up and the struggles they all faced since the Dark War.  We learn that Emma Carstairs is as strong, determined, and bold as ever – determined to find out what truly happened to her parents.  We see Julian, her parabatai, bearing the brunt of familial responsibility and yet remaining true to Emma.  And we also get to see the younger Blackthorn siblings – albeit a little cliché in descriptions – coping with the loss of their parents and growing into themselves.

Cassandra Clare has a magnificent way with words that draws you in and KEEPS you there. This novel is a monster, spanning 720 gloriously glorious pages of non stop goodness.  There was a lot of content in here that probably could have been left out but I am so glad it wasn’t.  I feel like over time I’ve forgotten just how addicting Clare’s storytelling ability is, and this novel was a quick awakening that never dulled for a moment.

This novel is full of plot twists and will keep you on your toes.  I rated this 5/5 stars for a reason – it was perfect.  It was everything I wanted and more and I’m SO FREAKING GLAD I picked this book up.  As far as I’m concerned, Clare can keep sucking this cow dry because she has just reawakened my love of the Shadowhunter world.

5/5 stars FOREVER.

I will be posting a discussion of this book next because it HAS TO HAPPEN.  Once you read the book hop on over there and fangirl with me because SHIT GETS REVEALED GUYS!!! DO NOT SKIP THIS BOOK!! AND DO NOT READ THIS BOOK IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED TMI OR TID.

UGHHHHH.

I won’t spoil this book if you have yet to read it or if you somehow have managed to not hear the ending of this book.

If I could go back in time I would take the manuscript of this book and turn into the Hulk. I would use it to pummel the heads of my enemies and stoke the fires. I would never ever let this become a mandatory school read. I would throw it at my enemies and laugh because I hate it so much. *hissssssssss*

  1. A Least Favorite Book:

Those of you who have been with me and my blog for awhile now, know.  You must know. I deplore this “series”, but I love the chronicle that it belongs to.  Does that even make sense? It’s the worst. ANGRY SIGH FOREVER. I think this is my top disliked series in a REALLY long time. #moreangrysigh

That tag was so short! Only 4 situations.  This is a total haterade tag though, so I’m sorry if you love any of these books.

PEACE YALL & HAPPY SUNDAY

Day 2 Blogging Extravaganza! | Bookish Things You’d Give a Kidney For

Happy Friday everybody!  Today is day 2 of the blogging extravaganza.  This is a super exciting month long (!) blogging extravaganza hosted by Rachel @ Beauty and the Bookshelf! You can get alllll the details here.  Today is only the second day, so join if you haven’t already!

Today is World Kidney Day, so today’s prompt is perfect.  There aren’t many bookish things I would you give a kidney for? But these would make me consider it.

  • ARC of Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas
  • Amy Engel, author of The Book of Ivy, to write another book
  • Laura Thalassa to write ALL OF THE BOOKS EVER
  • Go to BookCon and get all the books ever
  • Be able to travel into any literary world and interact with it and the characters.

What do you guys think?  Is there anything you’d add?  I’m trying to finish my ARC from NetGalley tonight, then I’ll be moving onto Lady Midnight. :]
